There is just no way to fully protect children

They say us homeschoolers do it because we want to insulate our kids from the world.  That could not be further from the truth.  I think what we want to insulate them from day-in and day-out stressors such as relentless bullying and rampant school violence.  They will still run into bullies... in their neighbors, siblings, cousins, church members, etc.  They will also be exposed to violence and/or tragedies in some way, either in
person or through the media.  It's sad, but true.

So I was already losing sleep last night because I was worried about my nephew who went to the emergency room.  After I finally fell asleep, my husband woke me with news that there had been a shooting incident in  Colorado... near where my daughter is this week.

Knowing that she had spent a good 6 hours during the day white-water-rafting, I was semi secure that she had not gone out to see the midnight opening of Batman, but there was still a tiny tug of worry in my heart.  I also knew I would get a call from someone if something was wrong, so I forced myself to sleep.

I woke up to news that she was sound asleep and not at the movie theater last night, and that my nephew was also home from the hospital.

Life happens.  Sometimes it happens hard.  As homeschoolers, we are not deluded that we can insulate our kids from life... We only seek to soften the blow.... until they are equipped to handle it.

Exactly, homeschooling can minimise many of those dangers but unfortunately we cannot eliminate them. I hope your family is all well soon. This trip your daughter is on seems pretty long. Maybe I am just reading with my "Mom" glasses on. :)

My nephew has a journey ahead of him. My daughter is home tomorrow... it was an 8 day trip. Actually, I wish her trip was longer because she's having such a good experience, but I am just as glad to be able to see and touch her.
