Blacks homeschooling due to racism?

Yesterday, I came across an article posted by HSLDA on Facebook. It was about the increase of black homeschoolers, and the reason mentioned for it was parents wanting to remove their children from racism.

The comments section was not pretty. People said things like:

newsflash - at most public schools where the behavior of the students is unruly and out-of-control, teachers bark and yell. it has nothing to do with the color of the students!

So OK. I get it, we're supposed to ignore racism and micro aggressions and keep our kids in school, or say that we are homeschooling for some other reason... any other reason.

Well. what about this?

In the United States, two institutions guide teenagers on the journey to adulthood: college and prison. Sociologist Alice Goffman spent six years in a troubled Philadelphia neighborhood and saw first-hand how teenagers of African-American and Latino backgrounds are funneled down the path to prison — sometimes starting with relatively minor infractions. In an impassioned talk she asks, “Why are we offering only handcuffs and jail time?”

There is no way someone - anyone - driving a stolen vehicle would be sent home with a handshake and a smile. Nope.

I can see her point, though, about the prison time for the kid who punched the other guy in a fight. She's right that in other schools it would not have led to prison time, but whether it would be just forgotten as she implies, I highly doubt. At the very least, suspension would likely happen regardless of the child's colour. Suspension vs. prison is a big difference, though.

And I went to read the comments section on the HSLDA article. Oh, based on that I learnt that black and Hispanic kids must LIKE to be yelled at. Part of their culture or something. Or. It's just that they "happen" for the most part to get the most crappy teachers.

Not one word about, this pains the heart of Jesus to see. I'm no bleeding heart nutball but it pains my heart to read all that mess, it really does.

Want to know the comment that really broke my heart the most? This one: But because you are black we should treat you super fragile!

I think it was the likes she got for it, that was the worst part. Glad that momma is homeschooling and she shouldn't feel the need to apologise at all if it were "just" a race thing. Not at all. Ugh.

Ok just wrote a book. Shutting up now.

A book well worth reading though. i'm tired of people getting mad whenever a transgression is pointed out, but the transgression is not an issue. Maybe black people have become extra sensitive... it probably because we are sick and tired... of the nonsense.
