Keeping in Touch?

While my high school career was far from perfect, it had its fun and educational moments. Still, I have maintained little connections since then. In fact, I have not spoken with anyone I went to college with in 10 years. I only have a handful of acquaintances from high school. Fortunately, I do have ways to get in touch with people I have not seen in years. There are high school reunion sites like reunion.com and the new onlyalumni.com that can put me in touch with schools alumni from my previous high schools and colleges. It does not matter if a person goes to school in Eugene Oregon Schools or if a person goes to Arizona schools , this web site helps you keep in tough with old classmates and friends. While reuinion.com is a relatively brand new website, I like the features it ads to the business of keeping in touch. This new online alumni and school reunion community allows blogs, alumni planning, and more. It also gives users the ability to meet new friends. Onlyalumni.com promi...

Don't forget the socialization!

My kids are in an upcoming production of Bugsy Malone Jr. So I may be pretty scarce next week and they will be spending hours and hours in rehearsal and then they will have 6 shows from thursday until Saturday night. I am very excited and nervous and trying hard to not let my daughter (who plays one of the showgirls) to see my nervousness. My son is doing sound for this play, so I guess I am not as nervous for him. I love the fact that homeschooling allows my kids time to do fun thins such as this that they also learn real life lessons from.... and don't forget the socialization! Families.com Homeschool Blog Week in Review

And so ends my first week blogging for the homeschool blog at families.com . I am back after about 8 months trying some other things and decided that I would not mind working for them again. I wrote a ton of blogs for them in the past week, so there is plenty to read. Topics include the California Homeschool Verdict, problems with public schools, and answers to a couple of homeschool questions. Check it out. Watching Children Grow in Knowledge

Here is a nice article on homeschooling at NewsOK.com. Garrett Morris, who is 12, likes to take a book with him while waiting for his sister's dance lesson to end. An avid reader, he can read a lot of books because his sister Katie, 10, goes to seven dance lessons a week. But on warm spring days his thoughts turn to baseball. continued here: Read more Notes From a Homeschooling Mom Visit Me at the Families.com Homeschool Blog

My Final thoughts on the California Ruling

Read my related article on Families.com Ps... I have nothing against conservative Christians... I am one. I just don't like exclusivity. update: After getting a You-Tube comment from someone who claimed to be involved with the case in question, I decided to research the case to make sure I was being fair to the family. While I have not heard from the family specifically (who I don't intend to call on the phone based on court records or personality) If you want to know more about the specific case, which is worse than I imagined... go here: Thanks. 100 hours to literacy?

Here is a story about a new method of homeschooling called Thomas Jefferson method that pupports a child with zero literacy can reach high school level in 100 hours. see video here While it sounds a bit iffy to me, it it is moderately affective, I would use it for a summer school program with kids who need improvement. HSLDA Finally gives Comment on California Ruling against Homeschoolers

This is an update from my accusation yesterday that HSLDA has remained mum on the new rulings in California against a homeschooling family. Well HSLDA finally did give a comment and called it an Unfortunate Court Decision in California and said that they are "looking at the background of the case to determine the implications of this particular decision by the Second Appellate District for the homeschool community in California." As someone at homeschool hackers suggested, the problem likely comes in the fact that there are abuse accuations against the parents... Still, if there is abuse, homeschooling still should not be vilified. Read more Notes From a Homeschooling Mom Visit Free Home Ed. Homeschool For Free!

HSLDA mum on California Ruling Against Homeschoolers?

I get emails every single day from or through HSLDA talking about how they SAVED one homeschooling family or other from the evil government. Meanwhile, for the past few days I have been hearing about how a Judge has ordered homeschoolers into government education . Now, while this above link will bring you to an HSLDA web page, it is just a newsfeed page. Meanwhile, they have had nothing to say regarding this particular case. My guess is this family does not meet the stringent guidelines HSLDA has set for who they will and will not support. However, if one judge can get away with this, won't others follow. If they are going to ordain themselves the great leaders and protectors of the homeschoolers, shouldn't they be leading or protecting? Read more Notes From a Homeschooling Mom Visit Free Home Ed. Why I wouldn't Use Scholastic for Homeschooling

I noticed some time ago that the Scholastic website had featured articles with homeschooling advice. I found this advice cursory at best as a way to make homeschoolers, who were also their clients, feel a little warm and fuzzy. Today I came across and article that cemented my feelings about the level on insincerity of Scholastic's dedication to homeschoolers. I find the article Why Homeschooling Isn't Right for Us by Carole Moore just as surface and insincere as many of their other articles like 8 Steps to homeschooling which includes watching for common pitfalls like lack of socialization for parents and kids. I could go on, but you get the point.... you won't catch me purchasing homeschooling materials from a company that doesn't respect homeschooling enough to write articles that lack any depth at all and continues to perpetuate stereotypes about homeschooling. Looking for a Preschool Curriculum

I see many email groups and blog questions asking for advice on preschool curriculum. I ran across the same question on this rather cool blog today. Personally I feel using the words "Curriculum" and 'preschool" together is an oxymoron. It's pre-school... curriculum's is school-school. When you are homeschooling, the first thing I believe you should teach a child is to love education. To get a child to love education, it's a great idea to not let them know they are actually learning anything.... (unless the concept has already been driven home by older siblings and relatives). Learning for preschool age children should be as natural as breathing, playing, and picking their noses. If I'd had the courage and opportunity to homeschool my kids beginning from preschool, we would have played games, stacked alphabet block, counted from charts on the wall, and played fun video games like Reader Rabbit, and read them lots of books.... WAIT. We ...
