How to Make Sure Your Homeschool Curriculum Measures up to State Standards and Grade Level

( after writing about 20 articles for an online content site, this one was rejected because I included links to other sites... I am posting it here for safe keeping) There are many points to consider when choosing a homeschool curriculum. Making sure your curriculum measures up to state standards and grade level are two very important aspects. It can be difficult to pinpoint what curriculum is grade appropriate when beginning a homeschool program.  If a child were starting out at Kindergarten level, then one would simply begin at the beginning, but if a child is beginning to homeschool after being in a public or private school, testing may be necessary to determine the child’s actual grade level.  I recommend the free online diagnostic test available at schooloftomorrow.com, which is one of the many available tests available.  The main reason for this testing is that in many cases a child had not mastered every topic they have been introduced in school, even if the chil...

pneumonia vs ammonia

...a teaching opportunity Driving along in the car with my daughter the other day, she asked me what ammonia was... I still don't know why. I asked her if she meant pneumonia or ammonia she said both.  I explained that pneumonia was a sicknes like a really bad chest cold, and ammonia was was a strong smelling cleaning agent.  She asked me to explain it two more times and then she asked why we didn't just call pneumonia a cold.  So I went further to explain that it meant you had fluid and an infection in your lungs and it was so bad that you could get hospitalized. I'm pretty sure she will remember those words much better than if they had been on a list and she had to write them down 5 times and then take a test on friday.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE "C" IN YMCA?

It certainly does not stand for Christian anymore! forwarded email ( with permission): We wanted to bring  to your attention a recent incident that took place with one of our ministry partners, Larry Lee, who lives in  Marietta, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta. As you read his  account, we are confident that you will see the  unacceptable and unfair manner in which he has been  treated by the YMCA. More importantly we are confident  that you will agree with us in concluding that Larry's  civil and religious rights have been violated. This  concerns us because it serves as a threat to our freedom  of speech in proclaiming  the gospel of Jesus Christ.  When souls hang in the balance we take these  matters seriously. We want to ask you to stand with us and contact both  the local YMCA where this incident took place as well as  the YMCA International Headquarters. Please feel free to  mail letters, call, e-mail or s...

where do the presidential candidates stand on homeschooling

I asked myself that this morning, and found myself on an hour search for the answer... here's what I came up with: http://www.hslda.org/docs/nche/000010/200110150.asp In this letter George Bush supports homeschooling while at the same time, he continues to toy with the 'no child left behind act' which is pretty hopeless at this point.  It's basically a draw here.  To me the pretty letter is just mouth service. Meanwhile Kerry has a 100 day plan to change america which includes the following:  http://www.johnkerry.com/issues/100days/communityservice_high.html   this amounts to more restrictions on graduation and thus more control over education.  This makes me very wary. At the same time it has been quoted that " if the parents choose to keep their children from "formal" education, it is their right.  that right should not be taken away." but no one can pinpoint  the words actually coming from his mouth. the only information I could find o...

they said: "come on, do it"

that's all it takes for a kid to get a kid to do something against thier better judgement... here's another example of public school socialization gone wrong. One of the girls, who appeared drunk in the video, resisted attempts by the other girl to grope her breasts, according to a sophomore and a senior at the high school who saw the tape and spoke on the condition of anonymity. Some boys, who appear only as shadows in the dimly lit room, urged "come on, do it" in the background, the senior said. At one point a breast is visible as the girl resists the groping while repeatedly saying "no," the students who saw the video said. full story here: http://www.nytimes.com/2004/06/25/education/25scarsdale.html?ex=1089000000&en=6cfc030ec5f70086&ei=5070
