Homeschool Lesson Plan: Teaching hygiene and skin care

You can use these ideas to teach personal hygiene and skin care to your homeschooled kids. This lesson would be geared toward upper elementary and middle schooled kids who need to develop a daily routine, while staying positive and eliminating stress over Acne. With this lesson, you can prove they do not have to let acne control their life.

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin disease has an excellent article on how to control Acne. It defines Acne, (a disorder resulting from the action of hormones and other substances on the skin's oil glands (sebaceous glands) and hair follicles) the cause and treatments as well. This source is an excellent basis for your lesson plan. You can find it at niams.nih.gov.

Read the following topics:
What is Acne?
How does acne develop?
What Causes Acne?
Who gets Acne?
How is Acne treated?
Treatment for Blackheads, Whiteheads, and Mild Inflammatory Acne?
Treatment for severe Nodular or Cystic Acne?

As you read each chapter:
Pick for spelling and vocabulary.
Draw pictures (of skin models, etc)
Use your own skin to demonstrate (use magnifying glasses)

The chapter, “How should people with Acne care for their skin”, demonstrate by caring for your own skin while teaching your kids to do the same. Show they how to gently but thoroughly clean their skin, show them the correct acne solutions to use and to avoid rubbing and touching skin lesions. Yes, teach this final chapter in the bathroom.

This lesson plan can be used for science, health, spelling, and vocabulary lessons.
