Do You Think You Need a Homeschool Consultant?
Homeschool consultants will offer to help you do everything from handling your paperwork to overseeing your child's education. Before you hire one, there are things you should be aware of.

I always role my eyes at the homeschooling consultant posts or ads. Very often they seem to be people who toute their experience in some field like teaching or tutoring. Yeah thanks, that's very often not worth much when it comes to homeschooling though.

The other thing I found is that the process of researching and learning about homeschooling was what laid the foundation for me being able to find and gather resources I use in homeschooling my children. It's a pain to have to google and lurk in message boards to find out what unschooling is but down the road those skills you used to find that out will come in handy when you need to find free mesopotamia coluring sheets. :)

I suppose some parents will find consultants useful but there's a very large contigency of us that are too independent minded to make use of them I think.

Anyhow, I think your post was great!

I never heard of a HS consultant before. Perhaps that's because California doesn't make families jump through hoops in order to HS.

I would consider hiring someone to help put together a portfolio if one was required for some reason (like high school/college admissions).

On being black and homeschooling.

If you didn't know my race previously, you do now. I am black. (african american, brown, non-white... whatever) There has been a great stir in the news lately because the number of black homeschooling has suddenly increased. As a black person, homeschooling is not a decision to be made lightly. "for the black community, teaching at home was frowned on because of the civil rights battle to get into public schools in the first place. Mike Smith with the Home School Legal Defense Association says the times are changing." But just as those first pioneers forced thier way into public schools to get quality educations for thier children , many people like myself are now fleeing. Why so late in the game? Problems with Frontier

If you've kept up with my sporadic blog, you know I spend a good year commuting to and from NYC, where my husband was working.  I tried several different types of transportation, as all that travel gets expensive. I ended up using Frontier, for most of my travel as if I traveled in advance it was dirt cheap... but dirt cheap is well... dirty and cheap. Like that time I took the China bus and spend several hours locked in a frantic gaze with a cockroach. So anyway, here are the problems I have had, the last one, I am currently still having. 1. Dirty...  The airplane itself could be cleaner.... but when flights are dirt cheap, you are dealing with a population that gives a pass on that, so between the effort to clean and the fact that everyone is getting on with enough food to last on a 3 month Trek to Alaska, then nastiness will happen.
