School year 2005 is almost over

I've spent much of the last month reviewing with the kids for standardized tests... Jackson is scoring 90% on practice tests, and Jordan still has a few things to review. we are coming down to the wire.... Jackson will get the real test on Friday, and Jordan will probably next friday... Then we move on to our summer schedule, Reading, reading, reading, reading comprehension, some math for Jackson to be sure he is prepared for Algebra next year and penmanship for Jordan.

If you don't homeschool you don't love your child! ?

I came across this article today on the internet... http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art31319.asp My daughter once told some college friends she had been homeschooled. Someone said, "Your mom must really love you. My parents would never be willing to spend so much time with me." My son, after listening to moms talk about how they couldn't wait until summer ended and the children went back to school, said, "I feel sorry for those kids that their mothers don't love them."Homeschooling is about a lot of things, but most of all it's about love. wow!.. Now I love homeschooling my kids, but I would never jump to such assumptions about non homeschoolers... that is just as bad as the articles that say all homeschoolers are child abusers. The writer had a nice intent, but it sends a negative message.

Homeschooling is Integrated Into My Life

As homeschooling becomes more and more integrated into my life I find the need to journal about it less and less. So I have to apologize to anyone dying to know what homeschooling is like. It is a lifestyle... plain and simple. Anyway, here is where we are right now. We had a rough year curriculum wise. The kids Started out using an online site that became less and less homeschool friendly as the public schools took it over. So we switched to the basics and used a "textbook" that shows what your kids should know each year. We are finishing those books this week and beginning preparation for standardized tests. School Zone has great $2.00 workbooks that cover all the basics and are great for review. I will let you know how the testing comes out. For next year, Jack will be in a middle school program called Cordis which is an extension of his arts and history enrichment program called Masters Academy of Fine arts. So basically he will be in "school" 2 days a week and ...

F for fat?

have you heard about public schools latest and greatest idea??? F stands for fat? exerpt: Some school officials and parents said Wednesday the legislation goes too far. "It's ludicrous," said Mike McGowan, spokesman for Cherokee County schools. "There may be a problem, but why is that public education's responsibility? What does that have to do with reading, writing and arithmetic?" Sharon Riviere, a mother of three children in DeKalb County public schools, said a child's body mass index and weight are nobody else's business. "Can you imagine the teasing that would go on?" said Riviere, who has worked in health care and noted that weight is a subject people want kept confidential. Georgia would not be the first to grade students' weight. Arkansas requires body mass index to be included along with grades on students' report cards. Pennsylvania will begin measuring students' body mass index by 2008, and Texas is con...

Piano in the morning

My favorite part of homeschooling I finally have the kids trained to play piano first thing in the morning as a reflex. It does a mothers heart good to hear songs like Ode to joy, and other hymns first thing in the morning. I really gets me going... Its good for them too... They say playing an instrument makes the mind more creative, and makes math and science come more naturally. I couldn't be more happy about my musical morning.

Dad is the great motivator

I had my childrens lessons printed out and ready for them this morning, but last night my husband instructed them to do thier essays assigment over... I knew he would be a task master when I asked him to help, but I didn't he'd make a 2 hour assignment last 2 days.... Anyway, they spent the better part of the morning redoing the assignment and the after noon doing the work I assigned.. they did however seem enthusiastic about doing the work... seems like Dad is the great motivator.... I think I will keep him.
