Reasons I am glad we homeschool: Klan Costumes?

Holy lack of judgment Batman ! A Dahlonega GA teacher in an effort to demonstrate a lesson on Racism thought up a school project that included students dressing up as Klu Klux Klan members.  According to the news (on TV) black students were frightened, angered, and upset.  As an African American Family living nearby this school, I am glad it is not something that me kids had to deal with.  Instead of being surprised, shocked, or worse by the stupid stunt, we can discuss it and use it as a teaching moment about thinking things out before you act.  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Visit My Education Column at Examiner.com Check out FREE HOME EDUCATION WEBSITE for free homeschool links and resources

Carnival of Education, Piecing it Together

The carnival blog website has been down for a few days.  This is why I am late getting this carnival together.  The site is actually still down so I am piecing the carnival together.    Education in many aspects involved piecing together many parts to make a whole.  Hence the name of this carnival. Raising Tutors

This is the natural progression of raising multiple homeschooling kids.  The first learns their lessons through mom, tutors, and outside teachers... and it is an excellent investment.  I was prepared to spend the same money for tutoring and outside classes for my second child, but the first ended up tutoring her.  He didn't tutor her on purpose, but she knows that if she has a question she should ask him, and he had no problem coaching her through rough spots. She learns with the help of her sibling, and he reinforces what he knows. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Visit My Education Column at Examiner.com Check out FREE HOME EDUCATION WEBSITE for free homeschool links and resources

What about the Prom? What about it?!

I spent the morning searching for a dress for my daughter to go to the spring formal.  It is open to all of the high school homeschoolers that attend 2 local Arts and /or Academic programs, so there will be plenty of kids she knows there.  She just finishing her freshman years so she is not worried about a date, nor did she get a typical full length prom dress, but the dress certainly is pretty.  Maybe I will post a picture later.  My son is passing on the event ... we may have to FORCE him to go next year when he is a Junior. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Visit My Education Column at Examiner.com Check out FREE HOME EDUCATION WEBSITE for free homeschool links and resources

Homeschool Graduations are cool.

Image
Today was graduation day for Artios Academies.  4 of my children's classmates graduated and all are heading to college.  It was an excellent program and ceremony (although I missed a bit) Each of the 4 students of the Arts conservatory, performed a 15 minute set (the art student did a short film) and had an art gallery.  Then there was the reception, and awards. Then there was the cap and gown diploma portion. As the parent of underclassmen, I worked on setting up and breaking down the reception hall... it took much of the entire week, mentally, and in time as well.  Here is a glipse of the reception hall where hordevours were served and awards (for high school student in general) were given. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Visit My Education Column at Examiner.com Check out FREE HOME EDUCATION WEBSITE for free homeschool links and resources
