My step brother and I tried real hard in school, and our reward was a pat on the head... sometimes. That and the feeling that we had accomplished something.
Our younger brothers were less motivated, so our parents bribed them with money. We were disgusted, our brothers still only did the minimum required to get paid.

While I think there are worse offenses, I hardly see this as creating a thirst for learning. They may have a 'ride' today, but unless they learn to love learning, they will surely be riding the bus in five years.
