Obviously, increasing amounts of homework isn't the only issue. I think parents today feel they are doing their children a huge disservice if they don't have them involved in multiple extra curricular activities. It seems like most American families spend very little time in the home just enjoying family life. Sadly, I don't think many kids really know how to enjoy doing the simple things kids used to do. They have to be entertained, overstimulated, etc.
Back to the abundant homework issue....I would have to agree that homeschooling would be a quick, beneficial solution!

I so agree. I have seen it with other children just how stressed they are about all the homework they are getting from school. Between all that homework and running around having a lot of extra curricular activities when do they get to be kids? Kids are not just little adults and shouldn't be made to do adult work loads. I honestly don't see what a bunch of homework does for a child except stress them out. Makes me glad I do homeschool my boy's.
Until our government/states/schools see the classroom as a priority, and spend more money on smaller class sizes (equaling more one-on-one instruction and guidance), this will not change.
We homeschool. My oldest two have also been in public school. Not only is there no comparison on the type of education they are receiving now, but we have large volumes of family time every week. Everyone benefits.
