Reasons I am Glad we Homeschool.

I am glad we homeschool because we get to choose our kids classmates. Even with my kids taking classes outside the home, as homeschoolers we still have a bit of control over our kids classmates. Since it is a paid program, we can demand the directors take action on problem kids and/or move out kids if needed. We don't have to deal with our kids being lumped in with students who beat teachers, which happened in a local middle school this week. Teacher speaking out about beating Read more Notes From a Homeschooling Mom Visit Free Home Ed. Homeschool For Free!

Why Homeschoolers Will Not Take the GED

Why Homeschoolers Will Not Take the GED There are many people under the impression that a homeschoolers should take the GED exam to prove they know enough to graduate from homeschooling. Homeschoolers disagree.

Every parent is suspect

In regards to SB 36 and SB 37, new laws in the works in Utah allowing homeschoolers to participate in extra curricular activities, the problems stem from a basic mistrust of parents. No one even tried to hide this apparent mis trust. The problem come with SB 37 where they feel public school parents will switch their kids to homeschooling to keep academically poor kids playing. I find this idiotic. To think that a parent is going to change their entire lifestyle to cheat the system to allow little Jummy, who is failing in school to stay on the football field. These people have no iidea about what it takes to homeschool a child. At least some people agree with me. Several legislators bristled at the idea that parents would lie about their children's grades so they could play sports. "Somehow, every parent is suspect and a closet perjurer ready to abandon their honor so their child can participate in extracurricular activities," said Sen. Mark Madsen, R-Lehi, who s...

Larel Springs an online homeschooling website has announced the winner of the "Why homeschool is cool" contest. Hazel Newlevant, 15, of Portland, Oregon, an artistic and creative homeschool student, received the coveted grand prize title and $1,000 for her video entry entitled "What I like About Homeschooling." Hazel drew black and white illustrations that she brought to life with full animation. The video expresses that the world is a homeschool student's classroom, not a homeroom -- showing that homeschool students can read, paint and do science experiments outside with other homeschool students. Hazel also provided the background piano music, Edvard Greig's "Watchman's Song." View Hazel's video at http://www.laurelsprings.com/videocontest/ Check it out... it's quite cool. How to Keep the Fun in Homeschooling

Educational Website Review: Jubilee Academy

The Jubilee Academy is one of the more popular and long-standing names in Homeschooling. It is a Christian, bible-based, online homeschool program for students from Kindergarten to grade 12. It is fully accredited. I am a strong advocate of using technology to educate children. Having used an online technology based homeschooling program myself for several years, I know that combining computers with homeschooling is the right thing to do for children. Jubilee Academy uses a combination of EBooks, Videos, Workbooks and CD-ROMs to educate students. Students can receive curriculum support any hour of the day or night. For Preschoolers, Jubilee Academy is built upon weekly themes in unit-study fashion. Elementary students study reading and language arts, math, social studies, creation science, and have religious instruction. Middle school courses are designed to prepare your student for high school classes. Parents are encouraged to mix and match grade levels to meet a students s...

Does anyone find this peculiar?

Here's the quote: "Yet after seven months and four letters, some students still have not had the shot and risk being barred from school, although the district has promised home schooling." Here's the story the quote comes from. I find it amusing that homeschooling is such a problem until it serves the school districts needs. Plus, it seems that they are using homeschooling as a threat. "Do what we say or homeschool your kids". Most amusing of all, is that is what spurred me to homeschool. I was told do what we say, or homeschool your daughter. I said "OK", and I did. I am still doing it almost 5 years later. Read more Notes From a Homeschooling Mom Visit Free Home Ed. Homeschool For Free!

Don't Believe What School Officials Tell You

On one of my homeschool email lists I read the story of a mother who was told that in addition to providing attendance to the school district, that she also had to send curriculum information. (The middle school secretary told her this when she withdrew her daughter from the 7th grade. ) The truth is, all she had to do was send an intent to homeschool notice to the school district, and send in monthly "attendance sheets". She didn't even have to withdraw her child, or speak to the school secretary. (although the withdrawal process keeps the school from calling to see where your kid is.) OK. First of all, do not listen to the school secretary. What does she know about homeschool regulations. Second of all, read your states homeschooling laws. Do no more than they require. The reason I am telling you this is because school officials will go beyond what is legal to make homeschooling difficult to you. Many are just telling you what they are told so you need to go st...

Wisconsin Eliminating Virtual Schools

New York Schools Turning Away Homeschoolers

It looks like New York decided that it is not in their best interest to provide homeshoolers with special education services. I find this interesting because in the state of Georgia, where I currently reside, the public school solicit us like crazy to provide special education services. They want the homeschoolers back in the schools because even a part time student will allow the school to get big time money. But New Yorkers are wily (as a Native New Yorker I can say that) and are quick to call on every free service they can get. But the poop hit the proverbial fan when parents in St. Lawrence County requested the schools provide physical therapy for their homeschool daughter. The child has club feet and numerous other problems. Therapy for this child was going to cost the school a pretty penny. I am sure the school administrators envisioned wings on its subsidy dollars. After all, such physical therapy is far more costly than the speech therapy and reading help Georgia pub...

Just because someone claims to be homeschooling...

Just because someone claims to be homeschooling, doesn't mean they are doing it. So just in case you are not aware of it, another mother has killed her 'homeschooled' children. Of course, Authorities are blaming homeschooling. There are several problems with this. First of all, the mother was obviously mentally disturbed. The neigbhors new it. The relatives new it. The children's Godmother new it. Second, the mother never even files the necessary papers for homeschooling (which a real homeschooling mom would do as she wouldn't want trouble from the start). In addition, school officials reported her to the authorities long before the children were killed. Still the New York Times entitles and article, "Lack of Supervision Noted in Deaths of Home-Schooled". What utter crap! Read more Notes From a Homeschooling Mom Visit Free Home Ed. Five things this homeschooler does not want to give up in 2008

Just read a post at Mom is Teaching which talks about a post at Just enough mentioning 5 Homeschool must have's for 2008. I can't say there are things I seek or am in need of. But, of all the things we have (regarding homeschooling), here are five things we would be hard pressed to give up. 1. Tween Snuggles. I have tweens who still snuggle. I fear the day when that will end. My 11 year old daughter still sits on me (I didn't say on my lap because she is too big for my lap.) She just walks up and plops down right on top of me. Many times we both topple to the floor. My 13 year old son (who we call big bear) will slowly stroll up and lay on top of our backs. (We tend to lay on our stomachs on the floor or bed while watching TV, or using our laptops.) He lays right on top of us from anywhere from 30 seconds for a quick hug, or until we proclaim that we can no longer breath. My husband has managed to tough it out for a couple of hours. 2. Laptops. There are four of us in th...

It is Ignorant to Assume Homeschoolers don't Socialize

When are people going to stop beating that dead horse. A homeschooler not socializing with other homeschoolers, neighborhood friends, relatives, church friends, friends at sports events is as unnatural as: bees not buzzing fish not swimming dogs not barking teens not kissing. Do you get the point yet. Homeschoolers have lives too! Right n ow my 13 year oldson is at a party from which I will pick him up in the morning... and no, it is not church sponsored!... oh, and there are girls there (who will sleep at another house). I drive my kids around so much I am thinking about putting a taxi meter in my car... but then I'd have to raise their allowance so they could pay me. The only real difference between homeschoolers and non homeschoolers is that we teach our own kids, or facilitate our own kids education. UGH... I don't know why I bother... I am probably just preaching to the choir again. What set me off today. Unofficial (Evil) homeschool (anti-society) networks (subversion g...
