There was a horrible bus accident here in the Atlanta area yesterday. An incompetent bus driver trainee who already had the parents and kids concerned, flipped a school bus yesterday. A teenager was crushed under it and died. Two other kids were badly injured.
As a homeschoolers, I want to think, "I am glad my kids don't ride school buses, so I don't have to worry about that". But I do. Anyone with a heart beating in their chest should be concerned about the clear callousness that allowed this tragedy to happen. The driver had hit a dog just that morning, a student reported. The dog wasn't even in the street.
This guy could not drive, yet he was handed the lives of our children, and a life was lost.
After wanting to know exactly why this guy was driving, I would love to ask why we still don't have sea tbelts on school buses.

Years ago, when I was first married, my husband drove a school bus and I rode as an aid. Just before we got the job a country bus was hit and numerous children were killed, five from one family. this was in Co. That was in about 1971. People called for some way to keep kids safe then and here we are with an actual strategy that we don't use. Amazing and sad!
YES! Seat belts on buses! We had an accident that made the national news a few years back. Brake failure or driver failure (I think the govt. agency determined driver failure, but there was documentation that the driver had complained about the brakes several times but they were "fixed").
There is concern that if the belts aren't worn correctly that it could cause more damage to internal organs, etc. and cost concerns and concerns that the belt end could be used as a weapon. Welllll... so could a metal compass point for sure!!
My older son's good friend has a sister who is permanently brain damaged as a result of that accident. This once-bright girl now cannot walk and is barely SLOWLY sounding small words... very painfully slowly... hard to explain. NEVER going to be the same. Now sleeps on a mat in the living room by the tv. Can't use the entire upstairs. Friendships gone. She is 15 now.
Mom has no more job... affects the sib's social life...
I just am astounded that people even think of justifying this. And they DO retrofit buses.
THERE IS NO EXCUSE. Get the bad drivers out of the buses and give those kids the belt. In a good way. :)
