I am not a freak... Let's bust some stereotypes!

I just read a blog (on a paid membership site) from someone who is homeschooling this year because of their child's disability. She says she went into a homeshool supply store and was stared at by the regular homeschooling freaks. She was wearing jeans and a t-shirt (gasp) and stood out from the skirt and blouse wearing homeschool freaks. So please tell me... what do you wear when you homeschool?

At risk materials used in public school may help your homeschooler

If you began homeschooling because your child was considered 'at risk' and was becoming more and more 'at risk' every day, here is a tool that you might find helpful. I can come across a program designed for use in school districts where there are a large number of at risk students. There is no reason however, that homeschoolers cannot use it too. (Of course, you may want to check the content for worldview vs. Christian view. The materials are available in multi packs and single servings too! "The ELA ASP (Academic Support Program) is a complete modular package for improving academic performance when students are at risk. By integrating instructional strategies with test practice, it is a powerful solution for the great majority of striving students who aren't served by test practice alone, while being flexible enough to "back up" as different kids need it, and has been designed around the IRA/NCTE standards." The English and Language Arts prog...

Time management for homeschoolers: Is it possible?

Sometimes, there is just not enough time in the day to teach 2 kids (and many of you have much more), run my work at home business, take care of my husbands needs, make dinner, care for 2 dogs, and 1 cat, and provide nutritional meals. In fact, there is never enough time. According to Timethoughts.com, “The key to time management is to realize that you cannot possibly do everything that there is to do; instead, you have to consciously decide what you are going to do with the limited amount of time that you have at your disposal.” The Time Thoughts website has oodles and oodles of tools, tips and information to keep you sane, and your family content. You have to try their time management guide too. Check it out.

Something to think about

As homeschoolers, many of us are working toward college; others already have kids in college. We really need to think about how we are going to start paying for college. Realizing that many homeschoolers get scholarships because our kids are so unique does not still mean we will not have to foot a bill of some amount. We encourage activities that colleges might think are scholarship worthy, and we also own a couple of rental properties so that we can pull out equity or sell at the right time. As bad savers, we are being creative in our approach. For parents who already have college aged kids and are trying to make room for more, you may want to consider Student Loan Consolidation. Student Loan Consolidation , according to Nextstudent.com , allows borrowers to combine one or more of their Federal education loans into a new loan that offers several advantages. If you are paying for several college tuitions, this might be to your advantage, once you have exhausted all creative method...

Cool Contest for homeschoolers with cameras

Image
It is time for the PhotographyCorner.com 2006 Photograph of the Year contest. Anyone can enter, (that means homeschoolers too) and with over $14,000 in prizes available to win, it should be an easy opportunity for anyone who has a camera. While you are visiting photograpycorner.com, take the opportunity to learn more about photography using the sites forums and resources. The resource page, by the way, has tutorials that you can use to help you win the contest, so do not worry about your amateur status; just grab your camera give the competition a shot. Homeschoolers can use this competition as a science nature journal or other project. You can take your camera out on strolls and take lots of pictures of nature, like a Lilly budding through the snow, or the rare squirrel scampering about this time of year. By focusing on nature, you will not only get to practice your photography skills, but also fill up your nature journal thereby learning a skill and some interesting nature fa...
