One event down, another on the horizon

As I drove the 40 minutes each way to the kids' homeschool program I was thankful for the heated seats in my car as it still hurts to sit.  With the fall play now over, the kids were excited for the last day of the semester as they are finishing up projects, and  getting ready for the winter chorus program.  My daughter is also beginning her preparations for CITA (Christians in the Theater Arts) High School Festival which is held in January in North Carolina.

She chose to perform two musical theater selections, one a solo and one a duet with another young lady.

It's like we go from one event to another.

What a great... and difficult week

Tech week if over and 5 shows where performed.  Somehow, I damaged my back during the week making it more interesting... I can't bend.. or sit.

Anyway, here is a photo from Cheaper by the Dozen

My daughter played the teacher... Ms. Brill.

That's it... the kids need to learn how to drive

My kids officially have lives.  There are late night rehearsals, rides to friends houses, errands, parties, and relaxation preferences that don't necessarily align with my wants and needs.

With this week being tech-week, with a play this weekend, there are late night rehearsals 40 minutes away.  I did that drive last night, and got up this morning and drove them back for a full day of classes and another rehearsal...  To top it off, I need to drive my son home at 6 so he doesn't have to wait around for my daughters long rehearsal.

If we lived in a city, life would be easier, because hopefully they could walk or take public transportation to where they wanted to go (That's how we did it)... but as suburban homeschoolers everything means a drive.

So, somewhere I lost control of my time and the only way to get it back is for the kids to drive.  Wait...that means more car payments.

Sigh.

A little bitter

The homeschool blog awards are going on here.   I have to admit I am a little bitter that yet another year has passed and I... errr... my blogs have been passed over... the same people are nominated year after year in category after category.  But then I think about it and realize that my homeschool blogs aren't created for the typical homeschoolers... I don't preach to the choir.

Instead of focus my energies on hoping to inspire new homeschoolers.  Oh well... maybe next year I will kiss the right person.

It's about watching and guiding

Even before we started homeschooling, I always felt that my job as a parent was to watch and guide my children to be who they wanted to be, not who I wanted them to be.  I have always said that I couldn't wait to see what they would be come, and I always hoped that while I wanted to influence who they are as good human beings, that I don't want to influence what they are to become.

There is an interesting blog post with thousands of comments at this point where the mom let her son dress up as Daphne (from Scooby Doo) for Halloween.  She wrote

They don't need my constant supervision

It is just past 1 am and I am unwinding from picking up my kids at midnight.  My kids have been at Bob Jones University all week at the Arts competitions they have each year.  I was surprised that someone questioned my letting them go without me.  I on the other hand never gave it a second thought, knowing they were with trustworthy people.  Just because we spend a lot of time together doesn't mean we are dependent on being together.  My kids are very independent.

No one will ever be able to accuse me of not having "socialized" children.
